While coastal communities are becoming increasingly vulnerable to more frequent storms, flooding and erosion, they also face challenges in keeping waterways clear and safe for recreation and commerce. Beneficial use is an expanding practice used to keep sediment in the system by placement of dredge material on degraded natural buffers, such as salt marshes and back bay shorelines. This is one solution that can make a community more resilient with benefits for people and wildlife.
The NJCRC Beneficial Use Learning Network and Municipal Workgroup assembled this panel of experts on the historic and projected value of sediment to coastal areas, types of beneficial use, and the steps New Jersey is taking to make this practice more feasible for local leaders to emulate. This session can help prepare you for opportunities that may solve dredging challenges and promote resilience in your community.
